Home Learning

Here is some work for you to do while you are at home isolating. Don't forget to read as much as you can too. You can still access REN reading - loads of books are on there, so don't worry if you finish your school book. Some of your favourites from home will probably be on there too if you would like to quiz on them.

You can save what you have done and show us when you return to school, or email anything you would like us to see more quickly! We hope you are feeling better soon and look forward to seeing you back in school.

Week beginning 22nd November 2021

POTIONS! Autumn 2, 2021

Potion: a poison, a mixture, an aromatic brew, a vapour, a liquid or sticky goo!

Welcome to the amazing magical world of potions and their properties. Now scientists, beware. There are some powerful and deadly potions out there, dangerous, unpredictable or tragic (just ask Romeo and Juliet.) Use what you know about materials and their properties to create incredible potions in Professor Hazard’s Potions class. Feeling sleepy? That orange juice did taste a little strange...

Anti-bullying week 2021 - Odd Sock Day

KS1 had a visit from the Fire Service and LKS2 were very lucky to get to a tour of the fire engine AND have a go on the hose!! Thank you very much :D

Testing the viscosity of liquids

In science, we tested the viscosity of different liquids by measuring the rates at which they travelled down a ramp. We chose water, lemonade, ketchup, fairy liquid and honey. We timed how long it took for each to reach the bottom, and discussed what variable we would change (the liquid) and which variables we would keep the same so that it would make it a fair test. The children recorded their results in a table and thought carefully about their conclusion, stating whether their prediction was right or not.

The results from the least viscous to the most vicsous were:

  1. lemonade
  2. water
  3. fairy liquid
  4. honey
  5. ketchup

After reading an extract from Alice in Wonderland, we discussed how dangerous it was for Alice to drink a strange substance from an unlabelled bottle. We decided to help Alice to make more sensible decisions by designing a WARNING label for her potion bottle.

We investigated the packaging of different substances from around the home, recording what safety symbols, imperative verbs, powerful words and important information we found. We then used this information to make our own label!

Road Trip USA! Autumn 1, 2021

Buckle up and put your sunglasses on – this half term we’re going on a road trip across the USA! We’ll start by ‘visiting’ the states where Native American tribes settled. We’ll use travel brochures and the internet to research New York and write postcards to family members. Using maps, we’ll locate the USA and find the names of the states. We’ll look at the amazing lights of Times Square, make circuits and create a program for a tourist trip around New York. We'll write diaries and explore Native American myths. After learning about their cultural significance, we’ll weave beautiful dreamcatchers. Looking at aerial views of natural landmarks, we’ll think about how they might have been formed. We’ll create travel brochures and make illuminated models of different landmarks. Then we’ll cook delicious dishes – would anyone like a corn dog? At the end of the project, we’ll make a ‘journey stick’ so we can remember where we have visited. We’ll use this to explain our learning journey. Please see below for some more information about what we will be covering this half term.

Take a look at some of the lovely things we have got up to during our 'Road Trip USA' topic. These include making Iroquois longhouses, dreamcatchers, electrical circuits and fajitas!
