Spanish
Hola: I’m Mrs Mooney and Spanish is a brilliant language! As it's spoken in Southern and Central America as well as in Spain, our pupils not only develop their language skills, but learn about different cultures as well.
At St Mary’s, our pupils start Spanish in Key Stage 2. We use the Kapow Primary scheme of work to learn useful words and phrases covering family, food and drink and other practical topics. Lessons are hands-on, engaging and adapted for all levels of need; for example, children sing songs, play board games and even create a climate change campaign advert.
Learning other languages supports children’s oracy and grammar. We want our pupils to grow in confidence as they learn to read and speak Spanish accurately in different contexts, enabling them to flourish as part of a multi-lingual world.

Learning new languages is an enjoyable experience for all in KS2. At St Marys we encourage children with EAL to celebrate and share their home languages and use them to compare and contrast whilst we are learning Spanish. In some of our classes we also have a 'word of the day' from some children's home languages - this enables the whole class to learn not only Spanish but the mother tongue of their classmates.
To ensure all children are able to access Spanish, we are adaptive in our teaching methods. Kapow naturally breaks language learning into the key areas of writing, reading and vocal skills, with a wide range of activities to allow all children to build upon their strengths. On Kapow every lesson includes an adaptive teaching section, providing clear guidance on how activities can be modified to meet the needs of all pupils. Teachers also use a range of support to allow all children to reach their full potential including modelling, scaffolding, visual and verbal prompts, a multi-sensory approach and opportunities for independent and collaborative learning.
